The mere mention of
the word Africa continues to evoke, in the minds of most people, images
of Tarzan and Jane, jungles and half naked cannibals cooking
"civilized" white people for dinner. Very few people realize that these
stereotypes, and numerous others of a similar nature, were orginally
created by non-African writers, artists and movie producers.
These
images continue to negatively influence the thinking of millions of
people worldwide. Despite the "bum rap" Africa has received over the
years many of the old racist stereotypes are being challenged by
Africans in the Diaspora who have accepted their African heritage, and
now view themselves through culturally sensitive eyes. (more)
